Chemistry Reference Unit

The Chemistry Reference Unit includes laboratories undertaking specialised testing in Endocrinology, Immunochemistry (proteins), Cardiovascular Markers and Immunosuppressants monitoring.

The Endocrine laboratory is a lead centre in the provision of steroid hormone assays. Expertise in immunoassay development has underpinned collaborative projects and contributed to many research publications. Innovation is integral to the Units success and the quality of the service they provide, for example, they are currently transferring many tests onto a Mass Spectrometry platform which is recognised as the gold standard technology.

The Immunosupressants laboratory provides same-day therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) for Cyclosporin, Tacrolimus, Sirolimus and Mycophenolic acid using LC-MS/MS for local and regional Transplant clinics. They have a reputation for innovation in assay development.

The Immunochemistry laboratory provides services to local Haemato-Oncology teams within the South East London Cancer Network. The laboratory is equipped with state of the art technology including capillary electrophoresis to provide a comprehensive immunochemistry service.

The SAS Cardiovascular Markers laboratory has been involved in clinical research for 40 years measuring lipid fractions by ultracentrifugation, apolipoproteins, lipid-associated enzyme and transfer factor activities as markers of inflammation. Landmark studies conducted by the laboratory include the St. Thomas' atherosclerosis Regression Study (STARS), the Whitehall, Oxford and EuroDiab studies and numerous investigations in lipoprotein turnover in a variety of diseases.
