Central Specimen Reception (CSR) is situated on the 5th Floor, North Wing, St Thomas’ Hospital. The department is the face of Pathology and provides a service to all the Pathology Laboratories, as well as the wards, outpatient clinics within the Trust and external clients such as other NHS trusts, Primary Care Trusts and the GPs in the community.
There are several functions to the CSR department which concentrates on the pre and post analytical work of the laboratories. CSR handles approximately 30,000 patient samples per week through its core reception.
In addition to the main reception CSR staff operate the Pathology telephone hotline, the hotline takes up to 200 calls per day giving advice on specimen container’s and giving results. Pathological report printing is also a function of CSR. Reports are produced for the whole of Pathology and distributed by the staff in CSR.
Staff working in the Central Specimen Reception are highly skilled in their field, many hold further qualifications with a scientific background.
