Departments

GSTS Pathology'’s services are divided into a range of departments. Click on the department below to find out more about what they do.

Biochemical Sciences
The Biochemical Sciences laboratories consist of four specialist units led by scientific experts in their field each with a clear vision for the provision of a quality laboratory service. Many of the tests performed require tailored interpretation and advice to aid in diagnosis and monitoring of disease, often delivered as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT). They have a reputation for cutting-edge Research and Development working with clinical colleagues and have won many awards particularly in the field of pharmacogenetics. Pride is taken in the training and development of staff and those on secondments.

Blood Sciences
Blood Sciences is part of the core division of GSTS Pathology covering Haematology, Chemistry and Blood Transfusion services. The department is based on both sites of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and provides services through core laboratories located on both sites and through rapid response laboratories located in selected areas of the Trust to provide results to critical need patients and Trust clinical services.

Tissue Sciences
The Tissue Sciences services comprise the main Cytopathology and Histopathology Laboratories, Dermatopathology Laboratory at St John’s Institute of Dermatology and the Oral Pathology Laboratory. The specialist Histopathologists and Cytopathologists are all consultant staff of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and work closely with their clinical colleagues.

Genetics
The regional Genetics Centre is an integrated service consisting of the Guy’s and St Thomas’ Clinical Genetics department and the GSTS DNA, Cytogenetics and Biochemical Genetics Laboratories. All three laboratories are CPA accredited. The Genetics Centre provides a service to the former South East Thames NHS region, with an estimated population of 3.8 million.

Haemostasis
The GSTS Centre for Haemostasis and Thrombosis is closely linked with the Guy’s and St Thomas’ Haemophilia Reference Centre. It provides a comprehensive range of laboratory tests covering routine and specialist haemostasis and thrombosis, molecular haemostasis and nutristasis. This group of laboratories also provide services to hospital anticoagulation clinics for patient treatment monitoring.

Infection Sciences
The GSTS microbiology, virology and immunology laboratories have links with the Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital Clinical Directorate of Infection, which encompasses infectious diseases, clinical microbiology, clinical virology and infection prevention and control services.

St John’s Institute
St John's Institute of Dermatology is one of the world's leading centres for patients with skin disease. It opened in 1863. There are five highly specialised laboratory services dedicated to the diagnosis and management of skin disease within St John’s.

Medical Toxicology Unit
The Medical Toxicology Laboratory is dedicated to the provision of medical toxicology services to the emergency and ambulatory setting.

Oral, Head & Neck Pathology
Oral, Head & Neck Pathology is headed up by consultant staff, all of whom participate in the National External Quality Assurance Scheme for Head and Neck Pathology.

Clinical Transplantation Laboratory
A Tissue Typing Laboratory has been based at Guy’s Hospital for over thirty years. It was perhaps presaged by the work of Peter Gorer, who both trained at Guy’s and spent most of his working life there from 1940. Peter Gorer was the first person to describe transplantation antigens and formulate an immunological theory of transplantation.

Molecular Oncology
The Molecular Oncology Unit is a national unit delivering both diagnostic services and internationally respected research and development to improve the understanding of cancers and assist in the efficient and successful treatment and outcome for patients with these diseases.

Phlebotomy
GSTS operates phlebotomy (blood test) departments at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and King's College NHS Foundation Trusts. The Phlebotomy Department based Guy's and St Thomas' and King's College NHS Foundation Trusts, provides blood tests on a walk-in basis. We carry out a wide range of tests including testing for routine tests, lipids, cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugar levels, malaria and many other routine and urgent tests.

Central Specimen Reception
Central Specimen Reception (CSR) is at the forefront of the pathology service and is where patient samples from many different wards, clinics, departments, other hospitals and GPs arrive so they can be sorted and sent to the appropriate laboratory. The 24/7 service processes over 130,000 patient samples per month.
