The partnership between scientific and medical staff ensures a full integrated consultant-led service for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of community and imported infections, healthcare-associated infections and infections in the immunocompromised host.
The fully equipped laboratories perform over 700,000 specialist and routine investigations annually to numerous Trusts and PCT commissioners within the South East and Pan London sector. They have a wide-ranging portfolio of diagnostic bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology tests. This includes a comprehensive molecular repertoire offering qualitative and quantitative PCR, real time PCR and pathogen genotyping that is fully responsive to the ever changing needs of the clinical colleagues such as within infection prevention and control, adult and paediatric critical care, haematoncology, genitor-urinary medicine and the Harrison Wing HIV service.
Infection Sciences, is approved by the Health Professions Council and the Royal College of Pathologists for training Biomedical Scientists, Clinical Scientists and Medical staff. Particularly, it hosts a large number of Infectious Diseases and clinical microbiology trainees on rotation around London.
They have an active programme of diagnostic development and technological innovation working with Trust clinical pathologists and front-line clinicians, particularly through the Trust Centre for Healthcare Associated Infection Research which is situated adjacent to the diagnostic laboratories.
