The unit is lead by Dr. Khalid Tobal, and has established a strategy to deliver a nationally and internationally renowned molecular diagnostics service for haematological and solid cancers. They have developed a number of new protocols for the diagnosis, assessment and monitoring of patients with various cancers.

The laboratory has particular expertise in acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APML), and provides molecular monitoring of residual disease in APML for the MRC clinical trials.

The unit has a presence on National and International organisations such as the European Leukaemia Network (LeukNet).
