Operational

We employ the following groups of staff across a wide range of specialities.

Below are the entry level roles within each group of staff:

Biomedical Scientists

A Biomedical Scientist (BMS) at Zone 3 is an experienced BMS who has a higher degree of autonomy and responsibility performing a complex clinical / scientific / technical role and / or manages and supervises a team. They may be studying for or have attained post graduate vocational / professional qualifications and awards.

Clinical Scientists

A Clinical Scientist is an experienced clinical / scientific / technical professional, who has developed their skills and theoretical knowledge to a high standard, performing a highly complex role and continuously developing clinical, scientific or technical practice within a defined field. They will have their own caseload or work area responsibilities and will have attained a Masters or higher postgraduate qualifications or equivalent vocational / professional qualifications and awards. They will already be registered with HPC and will be working towards their MRC Path.

Cytology Screeners

A Cytology Screener delivers scientific and technical procedures and/or clinical care under the direction of a regulated practitioner. They may work independently or as part of a team with practice appropriate for statutory regulation. They will be studying for or have attained a relevant foundation degree, BTEC HND or equivalent level vocational qualification or award.

Medical Laboratory Assistant

A Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) is a key support worker in a laboratory / department / specific area. The post holder will work within a team and will assist in the smooth running and preparation of their area. They will be working under supervision predominantly in a specimen reception area and not predominantly lab based.

A higher level MLA has responsibility for performing a range of protocol driven tasks within a laboratory area. They may work without close supervision. They may also provide day to day supervision of junior grade MLAs.

Phlebotomists

Phlebotomists perform protocol limited tasks in a narrow area and working within a team. May be studying for or have attained a NVQ level 2 award.
