Oral Microbiology

The Oral Microbiology Laboratory offers a specialist service to isolate and identify bacteria and fungi associated with oral infections. The Laboratory works closely with clinicians from the King’s College London Dental Institute based at Guy’s Hospital to develop and enhance the tests we offer, improving patient care.

Tooth decay and gum disease are among the most common bacterial diseases, and can lead to infection in other parts of the body particularly in patients with weak immune systems, making diagnosis and treatment important to wider healthcare.

The vast numbers of bacterial species found in saliva makes this challenging, but our wide test repertoire can monitor and identify organisms such as Candida, Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus and a wide range of anaerobic bacteria that are common factors in oral infections.

Our experienced laboratory staff can provide advice on test selection and interpretation of results, while consultant staff based at Guy’s are also able to offer clinical advice on collecting samples and antimicrobial therapy.
