David has worked in medical laboratories for over 40 years combining laboratory service provision with method development, clinical research and teaching. He has been instrumental in the implementation of automated and computerised methods. As Laboratory Manager at St Thomas’ Hospital, he oversaw the integration and development of services with Guy’s Hospital and was responsible for the introduction of the automation and IT programmes. His main interests lie in automation, information technology, robotics and process management.

David has long been associated with the International Committee for Standardisation in Haematology, working particularly with the Expert Panel on Radionuclides for the interpretation of measured red cell mass and plasma volume in adults. He has also been a long standing member of the NEQAS(UK) Haematology Steering Group. Other recent contributions to technical improvement have included his involvement with the production of the British Committee for Standards in Haematology “Guidelines for Point of Care testing in Haematology”.

As a sessional and part-time lecturer in local universities, and as an examiner in Haematology for the Institute of Biomedical Science Fellowship examinations, and for the state registration bodies, David has contributed to the education of future Biomedical Scientists in the UK. A valued lecturer, David has been invited to give a number of lectures on his specialist topics at both national and international venues. His expertise has been recognized in the publication of more than 20 scientific and technical publications in respected journals.
